#MLS thought for the evening: There is a troubling trend with attendance in MLS... Sure the league average is higher than ever, which is gr8
— MLS Convert (@MLSConvert) April 11, 2012
But the problem comes when you look at who is near the bottom of the league. The bottom team is Chivas USA- they need to be relocated. #MLS

So far this year 7 of the bottom 10 teams in attendance this year are what I like to call #MLS "Legacy" teams, or league originals.

Lest you think that this year is not a large enough sample size, last year 6 of the bottom 10 were #MLS Legacy teams.

I'm not sure what the answer is or even that it's a huge problem, but I've noticed the trend over the past few years and wondered why. #MLS

I guess my concern is that the "new" teams in #MLS may face the same attendance decrease after a decade or so in the league.

What happens after the newness wears off? Is that even the reason? I don't know, just thought it was an interesting observation. #MLS

I'm going to post these tweets to a blog with some images, but I must give credit to @SoccerTwit for his awesome blog and attendance #'s!

One thing that the attendance #'s do show is that LA is healthy... they are an #MLS Legacy team that is always near the top in attendance.

I feel that Uniteds and Revolutions attendance problem could be solved by a soccer specific stadium. Also, doesn't help that they have been in the decline the last few years. San Jose will be fixed by the new stadium. Chivas, FC Dallas and Columbus is a little concerning. I think Chivas should be relocated. I don't know the others are terrible since they have decent teams usually and have their own stadiums.
ReplyDeleteGood comment. The SSS's certainly help, but Seattle doesn't have one, neither does Vancouver. Chivas does need to be relocated- where, I don't know- St. Louis maybe?
